5 Tips for In-Line Merchandising

In-line (or in-queue) merchandising is one of the most important, yet underused queueing practices out there. Impulse items placed strategically in supermarket checkout lines generate $5.5 billion annually. In addition, items like gum, candy, and magazines distract customers from thinking about their wait, bringing the end of the waiting experience closer.

Here are 5 great tips that will help boost your in-line merchandising revenue:

1.) Signage: Individual, free-standing signs can be used to advertise a sale, announce a promotion, or simply display a message you want delivered to your customer. Signs for the top of stanchions are another available option.

2.) Branded Belts: Branded belts serve the same purpose as signs, and are a stellar choice for improving branding efforts without a huge cost. See our blog post for more on branding.

3.) Merchandising Bowls: Merchandising bowls are a sure-fire way to increase the number of impulse buys in your store. Place a few on the stanchions you’re using, and fill them with whatever’s appropriate for the checkout line.

4.) In-Line Merchandising Tables: These tables, which rest between stanchions, are great for prompting your customers to fill out customer satisfaction surveys or credit card applications without being pushy or impeding on their free time.

5.) Unified Queues: While this tip doesn’t exactly relate to add-on equipment, it will definitely help with merchandising efforts. Oftentimes, store managers are unsure of which items to put in the checkout lines. With a unified queue, you can be sure that every impulse product is seen by every customer.
